Are You Ready for Nesting Season?

By now, you should already have your nest boxes up and cleaned out (if necessary). Hopefully, you also are providing our Nesting SuperBlend and a nesting ball.  If there is anything you still need, we have a large selection of nest boxes for Bluebirds, Chickadees and House Wrens- many are made from recycled milk jugs to last a lifetime, and all include ventilation, drainage and cleanouts. We have poles with mounting brackets that make it easy to post mount your Bluebird or Chickadee nest box and baffles to deter predators. In addition, we offer Purple Martin Houses and Poles, Wood Duck boxes, Bat boxes and Owl boxes.

Nesting SuperBlend® is an exclusive WBU seed blend with calcium and mealworms (available in 7 lb. bags or 1.25 lb. seed cylinders), or try Bugs & Bits® - our blend of Bark Butter® Bits and dried mealworms which are high in protein.

If you are going to provide nesting materials, remember natural materials are best - twigs, dried leaves, grass and flower stems, pine straw, lichen, etc. We have nesting balls made from raw cotton that are also highly recommended. To avoid any unintended consequences, please do not offer any string, yarn, human hair, dryer lint or pet fur as all of these may cause harm to fledglings.

Now Is the Time to Prepare for Hummingbirds and Orioles!

Hummingbirds and Orioles are Worth the Wait

Waiting for something often makes it more exciting.

This is especially true as you anticipate your first glimpse of hummingbirds and orioles each spring. The excitement of their arrival at your feeders is guaranteed to bring joy to your heart and a smile to your face.

Be patient and rest assured that hummingbirds and orioles are on their way.  We generally expect them to arrive around May 1st.

Your feeders should be out before they arrive to help ensure they are able to get the nourishment they need and will not move on in order to find it.

If you are on the lookout for hummingbirds, providing nectar feeders and a variety of appropriate tubular-shaped flowers is your best bet to entice these summer visitors. Remember the nectar recipe? 1 part sugar (regular white table sugar only) to 4 parts water. No red dye! Replace your nectar every few days depending on the temperature- the hotter it gets, the faster it spoils.

To attract orioles, put out their favorite foods- oranges, grape jelly (no high fructose corn syrup, please!) and nectar (the same recipe as for hummingbirds).

We have a large selection of feeders and food for your hummingbirds and orioles.  Stop in and talk to one of our Certified Bird Feeding Specialists about the best products to attract them to your yard. Or simply click the button above to shop online.

So many reasons to be impatient for their return…but the payoff is always well worth the wait!
